Onno works through the contrast between solid parts and open space. That makes the base feel lighter and gives the table interest from several viewpoints, not just from above.
Let Onno sit where the base can be seen. In a larger living room, one piece can anchor the centre; where several sizes exist, a loose cluster is more interesting than lining them up too neatly. Keep the surrounding furniture quieter.
An empty surface flatters it more than an arranged one. A tray, a book or one object is enough; covering the surface would hide the material and the relationship between top and base that makes Onno interesting.
A rug with a defined edge and a simple table will hold the shape in place. Keep whatever sits beside it deliberately unremarkable.
