The useful part of Gary is not simply that it is modular, but that the modules share a clear visual language. Linear, corner and occasional elements can be combined without the final composition looking improvised.
Gary works best when the sofa is allowed to organise the room. Use it as a long linear run against a quieter wall, or bring it into the centre as a sectional to separate conversation from dining without closing the sightline.
The pleasure here is restraint; it holds its line whatever else is happening.
